Enrichment
Why does Paxx Equestrian focus on enrichment?
At Paxx Equestrian®, we believe thoughtful enrichment supports healthier, more content horses. Our designs are guided by natural behaviour, helping horses chew, explore, interact, and engage in ways that feel instinctive and rewarding.
What is equine enrichment, and why does it matter?
Enrichment refers to activities, objects, or feeding tools that encourage horses to interact with their surroundings; chewing, exploring, sniffing, playing, and solving small challenges. It supports mental wellbeing across a range of environments, whether they’re stabled, on limited turnout, or living in paddocks with plenty of space.
Do horses benefit from enrichment even in paddocks?
Even outdoors, horses naturally chew, explore, and manipulate objects. Enrichment provides safe outlets for these behaviours, helping prevent boredom and supporting mental stimulation during quieter periods.
How does enrichment support my horse’s wellbeing?
Enrichment allows horses to chew, explore, and problem-solve, keeping their minds active, reducing boredom, and easing stress. They’re a fun addition, not a replacement, for grazing, turnout, or time with friends.
Can I use enrichment toys in paddocks?
Yes. Our enrichment tools can be used outside as well as in stables. Placement matters. Natural fibre products like the Nibble Rope are best kept out of the rain, while rubber products like the Forage Ball are well suited to outdoor use.
How often should I offer enrichment to my horse?
There’s no set rule, some horses enjoy enrichment every day, others only occasionally. Offer as often as your horse enjoys.
Lick Mat
How durable are the Lick Mats?
Our lick mats are made from tough, high-quality silicone and are designed to withstand regular use. We recommend using them under supervision and removing once your horse has finished, checking regularly for signs of wear.
What can I safely use on the Lick Mat?
You can use any horse-safe foods your horse enjoys. Just remember to consider dietary needs or sensitivities, and consult your vet or equine nutritionist if you’re unsure.
How do I clean my Lick Mat?
It’s important to clean your horse’s toys after each use, especially when used with food. Rinse off any residue and clean with soap and water, or place it in the dishwasher. Ensure it’s completely dry before storing in a well-ventilated area. If your mat has carabiners, remove them before washing.
Can silicone stain?
Silicone doesn’t usually stain, but natural pigments in some foods may cause temporary discolouration. To minimise this, rinse and wash the mat after each use. For stubborn marks, try the dishwasher or natural cleaners such as baking soda or vinegar.
Nibble Rope
Will the Nibble Rope stretch?
Yes, stretching is normal, especially with enthusiastic play. The rope will still hold treats, and side loops can be used for added options. Hemp and cotton fibres naturally soften with use, and each rope is handwoven, so some variation is normal.
How durable is the Nibble Rope?
The Nibble Rope is made from a strong hemp and cotton blend and is designed for regular use. Inspect it regularly and replace it if excessive wear appears. Like all natural fibre toys, it is intended to be replaced periodically. This natural material also makes it a gentler, horse-friendly, and eco-conscious choice.
How do I care for my Nibble Rope?
Wash only when necessary (for example if heavily soiled).
- Do not soak
- Machine wash at 40°C
- Air dry completely before reuse to prevent mould
Natural hemp and cotton fibres take longer to dry, allow several days depending on temperature and humidity. Occasional sunshine helps keep the rope fresh. Store in a clean, dry place when not in use. For safety and enjoyment, replace your Nibble Rope regularly.
Is the Nibble Rope sustainable?
Yes. The Nibble Rope is 100% biodegradable, meaning it will naturally wear faster than synthetic toys. This makes it a gentle, eco-conscious choice for your horse and the planet.
Care & Safety
Do horses need supervision when using enrichment toys?
We recommend supervising your horse when introducing any new enrichment toy to ensure safe and appropriate use. Every horse interacts differently, and this helps ensure the product is suitable for your horse.
Our Nibble Rope can generally be used without constant supervision when hung securely, while our Lick Mat is best used with supervision. Always monitor your horse closely the first few times with any new enrichment item.
Are enrichment toys a replacement for forage or turnout?
No. Enrichment never replaces natural needs such as grazing, movement, companionship, or herd interaction. Our toys provide a safe outlet to chew, explore, and play during short-term situations, bad weather, or injury recovery, supporting mental and emotional well-being.
Are Paxx enrichment toys safe for all horses?
We use durable, non-toxic materials designed for equine use. However, horses are powerful animals and no enrichment product is completely indestructible. As with any equipment, always check for wear or damage and ensure suitability for your horse.
How durable are Paxx enrichment toys?
Our enrichment toys are designed to encourage natural foraging, curiosity, and play. While we carefully select durable materials, wear and damage can occur over time with normal use.
Natural materials in particular will soften and wear with use and should be replaced when needed. Normal wear and tear, including damage caused by chewing, pulling, or rough play, is expected and not considered a manufacturing fault.
How should Paxx enrichment toys be used?
Paxx products are designed as enrichment tools and are not intended to be weight-bearing, load-bearing, or used as tethering devices. Always use products as intended and in a way that is appropriate for your horse and environment.
How do I care for the hardware?
Our brass hardware is selected for strength and longevity. Over time, brass may oxidise and develop a blue-green patina. We love this natural ageing process and feel it adds character. To clean, wipe with a soft damp cloth and dry thoroughly. If you prefer a polished finish, brass cleaner can be purchased from most hardware stores.
Consumer Rights
Our products come with guarantees under Australian Consumer Law. You’re entitled to a replacement or refund for a major fault, and to have items repaired or replaced if they’re not of acceptable quality. If something’s not right, please reach out, we’ll always do our best to make it right.
Packaging
What is your packaging made from?
Our packaging is made from plant-based materials and is certified home compostable.
Is it plastic?
It may look like plastic, but it’s not. It’s designed to break down naturally rather than sit in landfill.
Is it certified?
Yes, our packaging is certified home compostable, meaning it meets strict standards for breaking down safely and naturally.
Can I compost it at home?
Yes, it’s certified for home composting. For best results, cut it into smaller pieces and add it to your compost with a little moisture.
Can I bury it in the garden?
Yes, but it will break down more effectively in a compost environment. If burying, cut it into smaller pieces and keep the soil slightly moist to help it break down.
What if I don’t have a compost?
You can reuse the bag where possible, pass it on to someone who composts, or bury it in active soil to help it break down.
