Introducing Your Horse to the Paxx Equestrian® Lick Mat
Setting Your Horse Up for Success
Start with a Favourite Treat
When introducing the lick mat, use a food you know your horse loves. Begin with a safe and familiar treat like pureed carrot or apple. This helps create a positive first experience.
Begin with a Small Portion
We recommend starting with a fresh, unfrozen spread. Use a small spatula to apply a couple of tablespoons of the treat onto the mat. Avoid the edges to reduce the temptation for your horse to chew them.
Offer in a Comfortable Space
Present the lick mat in an environment where your horse feels relaxed. Once they understand how to use it, you can try offering it in different locations.
Be Patient if Your Horse Needs Time
Some horses may need time to figure out the lick mat. Be patient and encourage them with treats they love. Our easy-going gelding took to the mat immediately, even when hung vertically. Our more anxious mare needed some time to explore it on the ground first. Now, she enjoys it even more than he does!
Introduce Sensory Variety
As your horse becomes more familiar with the lick mat, try introducing new horse-safe foods. Keep in mind any dietary sensitivities or requirements when selecting new treats. Always start with small amounts and consult your veterinarian or equine nutritionist if needed.
Increase the Challenge
For an added challenge, spread the food thinly or use sticky foods that require extra licking to remove. Freezing your horse's favourite spread can also extend playtime and make it more mentally stimulating.
Have Fun Together
Discover what treats your horse enjoys most! Whether it’s apple with a dash of cinnamon, watermelon with mint, or banana with blueberry, you can experiment with a variety of horse-safe foods for an enriching experience.
Cleaning and Care
After each use wash the lick mat thoroughly, dry it, and store it in a clean, dry area. If you're using carabiners, remove them before placing the mat in the dishwasher.
Safety First
Regularly check your lick mat for any damage and discontinue use if it shows signs of wear.
Final Tips and Thoughts
One of the best things about lick mats is their versatility! You can keep it simple with a single topping or get creative by mixing and matching flavours for a gourmet experience. A small spatula can make spreading the treats easier, and remember, you don’t need a lot of food to create a fun and enriching activity.
If your horse doesn’t love every treat, that’s okay! It took time to discover what each of our horses preferred, and they all have their own favourites.
For added stability, if you’re using the suction cups to stick the mat to a surface, give the surface a quick wipe and moisten the suctions for better grip.
